Gilas enters FIBA Finals after breaking Korea’s curse

By Elyrose S. Naorbe

Another historical event marks the Philippine basketball as Gilas Pilipinas romped away with head as they defeated South Korea, 86-79, and advance their play against Iran in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship Finals and will finally get their ticket  in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Gilas opened the first quarter with two defensive stops, and a long triple from Jeff Chan. But Kim Joo-Sung replied with an easy lay-up and a short jumper over Marcus Douthit to give Korea a 4-3 lead. First quarter ended with low scoring game for both teams
Castro scored the first four points of the second quarter to knot the game at 19-all, but the Koreans had their own 4-0 run for 23-19 lead. Lee Jong Hyun find an opening shot from mid-range and posted a 27-21 count in their favor. Lee Sung Joon added a free throw to bump the Korean lead up to seven points.

Jimmy Alapag nailed a triple at the 5:00 mark of the second within two points, but Gilas had to send Douthit out to the bench as he was injured his left leg.

Korea takes advantage of Douthit's absence and went on a 5-0 run, but Marc Pingris was able to lift up their team and close their lead down to four points with 3:28 left in the second.

Gilas went on a run led by Pingris to get to within a point of Korea, but Kim Mingoo made a tricky reverse lay-up to make it a 39-36 bumper in favor of the visitors at the end of the second period.

On the other hand, Korea was led by Kim Joo-Sung who outplayed both Douthit and Japeth Aguilar in the first quarter.

Instead of losing their hope for possibly playing without their big man in the court, Gilas went wild in the third quarter displaying an impressive performance and continue showing good momentum.

Ranidel De Ocampo’s mid-range jumper gave Gilas a 49-45 lead. Following a good foot back, a stretch lay-up by LA Tenorio made the count 56-48 at the 4:06 mark of the third period. However, Kim Mingoo completed a one play to bring the Gilas lead back down to five. Castro completed his remarkable third quarter play by dishing out an assist to Aguilar’s wicked slamdunk and ended the third as Philippines extend a 65-56 lead.

Mingoo, with a red hand, continued his hot shooting as he opened the fourth with a triple, but De Ocampo replied with one of his original shot for a 67-59 count still in Gilas’ favor.

But another Kim Mingoo trey got the Koreans to within five points. Yang Donggeun then added two points by a good fast break lay-up and close a lead at 67-64.
It was quickly followed by a Lee Seung Jun dunk to give Korea a 74-73 lead. He added a free throw to establish a two-point lead.

Alapag, as what the crowd expected gave Gilas back the lead with a triple with 3:01 left in the game, but Kim Tae-Sool quickly stole it back with a jumper to settle the score at 77-76 in favor of Korea. The see-saw battle between the two fierce rivals continues with a few seconds remaining. Pingris stole the ball, which led to a De Ocampo’s cold-blooded triple for an 81-77 Gilas lead.

The fourth ended as the crowd goes wild as Gilas Pilipinas successfully broke Korea’s curse and posted the 86-79 final score. They will advance to the FIBA finals wherein they will be battling against the strong squad of giant Iran at MOA Arena today, 8:30 PM.
